Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Unveils Six New Technologies at Annual R&D Open House

TOKYO, February 14, 2013 - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced six new technologies, outlined below, at its annual Research and Development Open House held today at its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.


No.2730 Electric Power Management System for Self-sustained Operation in Communities
Enables self-sufficient power supply for more than one week
The company announced today that it has developed a prototype electric power management system that combines an ideal mix of storage batteries and photovoltaic power generation for self-sustained operation in communities during extended blackouts. The technology was achieved through the company's Smart Grid and Smart Community initiative.

No.2731 Energy Management System with Demand-response Capability
Stabilizes power supply & demand management while minimizing electricity costs
The company announced today that it has developed the technology for an energy management system that responds dynamically to supply-demand conditions. The system automatically evaluates fluctuating power-generation costs and electricity-market prices to determine optimized incentives for saving power, thereby helping to stabilize supply and demand management while minimizing costs and benefits for utilities and customers alike. The technology was achieved through the company's Smart Grid Demonstration Project initiative.

Reduces total railway energy consumption by up to five percent

World-leading capacity will lead to smaller, lighter equipment
The company announced today that it has developed large-capacity silicon carbide (SiC) power module technologies incorporating all-SiC power devices for unprecedented 1,200-volt, 1,200-ampere performance. The new technologies, which have been incorporated in a prototype module, are expected to expand SiC applications to factory automation equipment, elevators, escalators, photovoltaic systems, wind-power generation systems and other industrial uses.

No.2734 World's Best Error-correction Technology for High-capacity Optical Communication
The company announced today it has developed an error-correction technology that achieves a coding gain of 12.0dB, the world's highest level as of February 14, 2013 according to internal research, for high-speed and high-capacity optical communication systems over long distances. The technology will be launched in the fiscal year starting in April 2014.

No.2735 100 Gbps Optical Transmission Technologies for High-capacity Intercity Communication
The company announced today it has developed an optical transceiver and integrated optical transmitter module for 100 Gbps optical transmission per wavelength that realizes 2.5 times the capacity of conventional intercity optical networks. The technologies, which will help to meet fast-expanding demands for intercity communication capacity, will be commercialized within the fiscal year ending in March 2014.
