Mitsubishi Electric Wins FACTS Equipment Order from Oncor for Brown Switching Station in Texas
TOKYO, Oct. 23, 2012 - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) and its US affiliate Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. of Warrendale, Penn. announced today the award of an order for more than $45 million (USD) from Texas-based electric delivery company Oncor for two large Static VAR Compensator (SVC) systems at the Brown Switching Station near Brownwood, Texas. The SVC systems will use their total capacity of over 1100 controlled Mvar. to provide post-contingency support and voltage regulation for the Oncor power system.
This order comes as a milestone for Mitsubishi Electric in North America, where the company continues to expand its flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) business for SVCs and other grid-stabilizing equipment. The Oncor SVCs will be placed into commercial operation in January of 2014.
Demand for transmission and distribution equipment in North America is expected to increase due to the growth of renewable energy systems, and replacement demand for aging infrastructure such as switching stations. According to the International Energy Agency's World Energy Outlook 2011, renewable-based electricity generation will increase five-fold from 52 gigawatts in 2009 to 251 gigawatts by 2030 in the United States. The renewable energy rate to total power generation capacity will expand from five percent in 2009 to 19 percent in 2030, the agency reports. Because of the renewable energy's unsteady power output and its distance from urban load centers, it is important that renewable energy sources are stabilized by transmission and distribution equipment.
Texas is a recognized national leader in renewable energies. The SVC systems will support the transmission of renewable energy from generation sites in West Texas to population centers across the state.
