UL Standard (Underwriter’s Laboratories) American Safety Standards (UL 489, UL 1077)
UL is a US agency that establishes UL Standards which are safety standards, conducts safety verification tests based on these UL Standards, then issues certificates and approves certification marks for products that pass the testing process. The UL certification mark is widely recognized in the US. Some states and cities require UL certification, and it is also required when exporting equipment, control panels, devices, etc., to the US. UL certified products have obtained UL component certification (Recognition) or UL product certification (Listing) in accordance with UL Standards (UL 489, UL 1077), and can be used when incorporated in control panels and equipment, etc. exported to the US.
UL Recognition
This is referred to as component certification and is intended to be incorporated into other products or devices. In other words, certified components can be used when incorporated into control panels, machine tools, control devices, and other mechanisms.
UL Listing
This is referred to as product certification and allows products to be sold to, and used by, direct end-users. They can be used for integration into control panels, machine tools, control devices, and so forth.
CSA Standard (Canadian Standard Association) Canada Standard (CSA C22.2 No.5)
CSA Standard describes product safety standards established by the Canadian Standard Association (CSA). In Canada, state law governs the safety of electronic products, some of which require that they be CSA certified. For this reason, CSA Standard certification is required when exporting equipment, control panels, devices, etc., to Canada.
UL is recognized by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) as a testing, certification, and quality assessment and registration organization, and CSA certified products (cUL) by UL are recognized by safety regulations in all Canadian provinces.
The following certification marks are recognized for products certified to both UL and CSA standards. (Separate marks for the US and Canada are still allowed as before.)
